Mold Screening Kit Instructions
SWAB TEST —IAQ Culture Screening Collection Procedure
PRINCIPLE
To detect and monitor cultures for mold and mildew or potential infectious agents in a tested facility.
REAGENTS/SUPPLIES
Sterile collection swabs
METHOD WITHOUT USE OF AIR PURIFIER
- Select areas of facilities to be tested. Example: vents, dust from door ledge, drain pans, or growth on sur-face, etc.
- Use sterile swab to collect sample by swabbing area(s) in a 1 square inch fashion.
- Re-cap sterile swab and label appropriately (date, location, etc.)
- Package swab and send to laboratory via standard mail.
METHOD WITH USE OF AIR PURIFIER
- Select area of facility to be tested. Example: vents, dust from door ledge, drain pans, or growth on surface, etc.
- Use FIRST sterile swab to collect sample by swabbing selected area in a 1 square inch fashion.
- Re-cap sterile swab and label appropriately (date, location, etc.)
- Turn on air purifier and wait five calendar days.
- Use SECOND sterile swab to collect sample by swabbing same area in a 1 square inch in exactly the same manner as the first swab.
- Package swabs and send to laboratory via standard mail.
INTERPRETATION
- Swab will be plated at the laboratory on supportive agar and incubated at 25-30 degrees C.
- Cultures will be observed for growth over a 5-10 day period.
- Colonies grown will be identified and a measure of growth will be noted.
POTENTIAL ORGANISMS
Aspergillus sp., Stachybotrys sp., Cladosporium sp., Curvularia sp., Penicillium sp., Rhizopus sp., Mucor sp., Alternaria sp., Fusarium sp., etc. and yeast, if present.
EnviroTape LIFT & BULK SAMPLE —IAQ Screening Collection Procedure
PRINCIPLE
This is a qualitative screen to detect and monitor environmental samples for the presence of fungal elements.
REAGENTS/SUPPLIES
EnviroTape or clear scotch tape, clear plastic baggy, or bulk sample bag.
METHOD
- Select surface area to be tested. Example: dry wall, sheetrock, wood frame or counter top, etc.
- Use EnviroTape or clear scotch tape: lay gently on surface to be tested and peal back then stick tape to clear bag or replace onto EnviroTape slide.
- Bulk Sample bag: place bulk material in bag and seal closed.
- Label bags: with source, date, and collection person initials. Provide address for lab report to be sent.
- Package samples and send to lab.
INTERPRETATION
- Samples will be analyzed at the laboratory by microscopic analysis or cultured as needed.
- Culture will be observed for growth up to a 10-day period.
- Molds or fungal fragments will be identified. Also a report on the molds present will be generated to suggest if they are potentially colonized on the surface samples tested.
POTENTIAL ORGANISMS
Various Genera will be identified.
